The Regents

Regents High School examinations, or simply The Regents, are exams catered to high-potential students. Students will receive high school Regents credit through the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Regents exams are prepared by a conference of selected New York teachers of each test's specific discipline who assemble a "test map" that highlights the skills and knowledge required from the specific discipline's learning standards. The conferences meet and design the tests three years before the tests' issuance which includes time for field testing and evaluating testing questions. . To graduate with what is called a "Regents' diploma is required to score equal to or above 65 in a particular exam.

Five Regents Exams:

1). Integrated Algebra (or Math A)

2). Global History and Geography

3). U.S. History and Government

4).Comprehensive English,

5). any one science regents.

To receive an Advanced Regents Diploma, students must also pass an Additional exam.

1). science exam, (Earth Science, Chemistry, or Physics).

2). math exam (Geometry and Algebra 2/ Trigonometry a.k.a. Math B).

3). Foreign language exam.

Examination Formats:-

The Regents examinations are conducted in the month of January, June, and August. These examinations are usually three hours long. The exceptions are the Comprehensive English exam, the Earth Science exam, and the foreign language exams.

» Comprehensive English consists of two separate three-hour exam periods over two consecutive days.

» Earth Science consists of a 41 minute (approximate) laboratory component usually given up to two weeks prior to the three hour written exam.

» Several of the foreign language Regents has oral exams which are administered before the written test and are not part of the three hour time limit.

Note:- Regents Math A and Math B examinations are now eliminated and are replaced by a revised and integrated Math curriculum. Regents Board has divided Math curriculum into 3 sections viz. Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II and Trigonometry, with examination conducted at the end of each year for particular topic.

Regents’ exams structure:-

A multiple-choice section (Part I), which usually has between 30-50 questions, and a long-answer/essay section (Part II).Work has to be shown for evaluation after selecting a topic to work on (in Physical Sciences).Selection of essay topics is made and one or two of them are written out in details. There is a third section on listening skills (with passages read aloud by a proctor) for foreign language test. Regents History exams also include a section of short responses on primary documents. For both social science exams, two essays are required and students are not served any choice in choosing topics of the essays.
